  • The total number of Elgauda and phantoms corresponds to the total number of dots on each trio of dice.

  • Something about the position of dots distinguishes Elgauda from phantoms.

  • Dots in the centre of a die (on a 1, 3 or 5) predict Elgauda; other dots predict phantoms. The best ratio is what needs to be identified.

  • The four nights’ predictions are: two Elgauda to ten phantoms, one Elgauda to four phantoms, three Elgauda to six phantoms, two Elgauda to ten phantoms. The best ratio is on the third night.

  • Using the previous solution here provides three symbols.

  • For this puzzle, only which night is of importance.

  • One symbol represents Elgauda, one represents phantoms.

  • The symbols in the third column, representing the third night, are the solution—the top symbol is associated with Elgauda, the middle symbol is associated with phantoms, the bottom symbol is the target symbol.

Page (iii)

  • The prior solutions to (i) and (ii) are needed here.

  • The text describes what to do.

  • Select the correct axes and correct numbers of Elgauda and phantoms to determine a starting point, then note the direction to the target.

  • 3 on the top axis (Elgauda) and 6 on the left axis (phantoms) is the starting position. This is seven squares to the left of the target symbol for that night. Left to right (or west to east) is the correct direction of approach.

  • The two prior solutions are used here.

  • The central mirrors reflect at a 90-degree angle.

  • Anna enters through one door (correct symbol, on the appropriate side) and exits, reflected, through a door with a different symbol.

  • Entering by the fourth door down on the left side (due to the target symbol and direction of approach), Anna exits through the fourth door on the top side of the Brannhouse.

  • The text on the next page describes how to interpret this puzzle.

  • Each symbol in the snow is associated with a clue.

  • Each clue refers to a choice of animals on the next page; the correct symbol from the prior solution will provide the correct clue.

  • The correct symbol is associated with MY FEET MAKE HASTE.

Page (vi)

  • Anna has completed the first part of the compass ritual; the numbers of clicks just need to be counted.

  • Note the direction the compass now moves in, and that each animal symbol appears twice.

  • Rotating the compass arms clockwise, count how many 45-degree rotations (i.e. one arm) it takes to reach each of the symbols of the correct animal.

  • The rabbit matches the prior solution—its symbol appears after three arm-rotations and after seven. Three and seven are the solution.

Page (vii)

  • Use the grid on page (iii) along with the answer to the previous puzzle.

  • The numbers from the prior answer should be plotted on the grid.

  • The symbols on the compass arm-tips tell you which axes should be used. Your result will point you towards one of six highlighted possible answers.

  • The rabbit symbol appears at 3,7 if plotted on the right and top axes, as per the symbols on the tips of those respective compass arms. The resulting square on the grid features a mouth symbol, referring to the option “The Voice”. This makes the final answer for this chapter THE VOICE.
