  • The satchel material and information on the next page are both essential to solving this. The last line on the plate will make more sense as the chapter progresses.

  • Note the border details: the starry darkness, the flames, the orientation of the moth.

  • Moons must be beside dark sky borders; the white lines need to be continuous and will form a symmetrical pattern.

  • Fulfilling the requirements that the moons be beside the dark sky borders and the light forms a continuous path, means the moth tile ends up on the central space.

  • There are two elements to the prior solution—one guides the correct choice here.

  • The moth’s position is the clue here.

  • The silhouette on the board where the moth tile is placed matches one of the keys.

  • The silhouette of the moth’s position matches the third of the keys.

Page (iii)

  • Again, part of the prior solution isn’t relevant yet; your choice here should be straightforward.

  • The locks each have a creature on them.

  • There are several elements to the solution—what you’ll need next are a shape and a number.

  • The scorpion lock matches the key with a scorpion on it. The star and V+V should both be noted.

Page (iv)

  • The solution needed for the next puzzle is just one object.

  • The prior solution provides a shape and a number; the letters nearest the hearth are not used—yet.

  • Roman numerals are relevant; a combination of a shape and a letter in a white circle indicate the correct choice.

  • The combination of the star and X (V + V = X i.e. 5 + 5 = 10 in Roman numerals) means the correct choice is the bundle of plants.

Page (v)

  • Only one set of instructions is needed.

  • Select the text that matches the object chosen in the prior solution.

  • The oversized letter is not significant yet—but will be soon.

  • The text associated with the correct item starts “Orange comet meets…”

Page (vi)

  • Only one route matches the prior solution.

  • Three planes are depicted on the Tracerboard.

  • The route will take on more significance soon, but the endpoint is what’s important now.

  • The only route that matches the instructions is the one that leads from the orange comet at the top of the board down to the black arrow that is in the plane of fire at the bottom.

Page (vii)

  • The correct choice here is relatively straightforward, but the final answer involves previous pages.

  • This solution is a letter, but all prior pages also contribute a letter (except (ii), which contributes three). Note “the light begins to spell the name.”

  • Light path, key teeth, creature shape, hearth position, large letter, route shape, image shape.

  • From page: (i) The Tracerboard white space is a W, (ii) the key teeth form the shape of I L L, (iii) the scorpion forms a C, (iv) the hearth position that casts a shadow on the correct item is R, (v) the O is oversized, (vi) the route is shaped like an S, (vii) the snake is shaped like an S—the final answer is WILL CROSS.
