  • It’s a riddle—and each part of the riddle refers to the same solution.

  • A musical instrument has rows of white and black teeth.

  • The solution is KEY—a key allows decoding of map symbols; “principle” and “key” can be synonyms; closing or unclosing locked doors can be achieved with a key; pianos white and black “teeth” are keys; and a song with no musical key is discordant.

  • Only one book is selected.

  • The others are irrelevant.

  • The label on the spine of the correct choice is the solution.

  • The second book on the lower shelf has the image of a key on it. The symbol on the spine is the solution.

  • All that’s required is to decode the cipher and pick the right section.

  • One symbol equates to one letter. You may need to use a bit of trial and error if the cipher doesn’t seem familiar.

  • The text at the top begins IN THE OUTSKIRTS…

  • Decoded, the text at the top reads: “IN THE OUTSKIRTS, MEMBERS OF THE SISTERHOOD CAN FIND REFUGE IN ONE OF SIX SAFEHOUSES”—selecting the correct symbol based on the prior solution links to the solution THE HOUSE OF THE CROW.

  • The illustrations of buildings are unimportant here.

  • The prior solution points to Rakuma’s location in Red Tree Hill, where Anna is trying to get to.

  • The solution, for now, is just the coordinates of the destination.

  • The crow icon appears at (2,5) on the map.

Page (v)

  • Follow the information in the text—Anna trying to get THERE.

  • And HERE is where the Shadowhouse shortcut allows Anna to appear with the skeleton key.

  • Turn the X and Y dials so the location previously identified is in the THERE window. The solution is the HERE location.

  • Setting the inner dial to 2 and the outer dial to 5 in the top window will mean that the bottom window shows 5 on the inner dial and 2 on the outer dial.

Page (vi)

  • The true set of three cards is what needs to be chosen.

  • The key is not relevant to this puzzle; the map is oriented with north at the top.

  • Compare the HERE location Anna was transported to with the THERE location that she then walked to—note the direction traveled.

  • From (5,2) to (2,5) is north-west. The associated three cards are the solution.

Page (vii)

  • The final answer is three words; the bell and key icons are not part of the puzzle.

  • There are three sections of three chains and the ram has arrows, a heart and herbs.

  • The card numbering (I, II, III) refers to the chain numbering.

    1. From the prior solution, the first card shows a heart—on the long chain marked I, near the heart, is the word THE; on the II chain by the arrows is the word HALLOWED and on the III chain by the herbs is the word RIVER—the final answer is THE HALLOWED RIVER.
